What counts as a large rug pad?
Anything from a 9' x 12' up. A large rug pad is the layer that goes between a big rug and the floor — cut about an inch smaller than the rug on every side, so it stays completely hidden — and it does three jobs: it holds the rug in place, it protects the floor underneath, and it makes the rug feel better underfoot. The bigger the rug, the more floor there is to protect: a 12' x 15' puts 180 square feet of rug backing against your floor.
Shop large rug pads by size
Every large size has its own page with exact prices:
- 9 x 12 Rug Pad
- 10 x 12 Rug Pad
- 10 x 14 Rug Pad
- 11 x 14 Rug Pad
- 12 x 12 Rug Pad
- 12 x 15 Rug Pad
- 12 x 16 Rug Pad
And if your rug is bigger or an in-between size, that's the normal case here: every pad below is custom cut to your rug's exact measurements, up to 12 feet wide and 65 feet long, in one piece. Enter the size on the product page and the price adjusts to your rug.
Why bother with a pad at all?
1. The rug stops moving
Even a big rug creeps. Corners curl, edges wrinkle, and the whole thing slowly migrates across the room — especially where people walk. The right pad holds it flat.
2. Your floor is protected
A rug's backing is rougher than it looks. Left sitting on hardwood, laminate or tile for a few years, it can wear the finish down. A pad puts something soft in between.
3. It feels better
A thin rug straight on a hard floor feels like a sheet. Put a felt pad under it and it feels like a rug.
4. The rug lasts longer
Every step grinds a rug against the floor. A pad takes that wear instead, so the fibers hold up longer.
5. The room gets quieter
Felt soaks up footstep noise — worth having upstairs, or in an apartment.
How to choose the right pad
Hardwood, laminate, tile and vinyl floors
At this size the choice is felt for cushion, or felt and rubber when you want grip as well. Our thin grip pads don't run this large — and a rug this heavy mostly stays put on its own. If the edges still shift, Felt and Rubber is the non-slip pick:
- Felt and Rubber 1/4" — felt on top for cushion, natural rubber underneath for grip.
- Felt and Rubber 5/16" — the same idea, with more cushion.
On top of carpet
For an area rug over wall-to-wall carpet, use the Carpet Grip pad — it goes in felt side down, rubber side up, and keeps the rug from bunching and creeping on the carpet.
Radiant heated floors
Pick a breathable felt pad — the Choice Felt pads let the heat pass through instead of trapping it under the rug.
If furniture is holding the rug down
Under a bed, a dining table or a heavy sofa, a 12' x 15' rug usually isn't going anywhere, so shop for cushion instead of grip. The Choice Felt pads come in three thicknesses:
- Choice Felt 1/4" — a little extra comfort, stays low.
- Choice Felt 3/8" — more cushion and more sound dampening.
- Choice Felt 1/2" — the thickest, softest felt we make.
Picking a thickness
Thinner pads sit lower, which matters at doorways and under chairs that slide in and out. Thicker pads feel softer and quiet the room more. If a door has to swing over the rug, go thinner.
Sizing tip: the pad should be smaller than the rug
About an inch smaller on every side — that's what lets the rug's edges lie flat and keeps the pad out of sight. For a true 9' x 12' rug, the pad comes out at roughly 8' 10" x 11' 10" — the same inch-in-from-every-edge rule applies at every large size.
You don't need to measure twice or trim anything yourself. Enter your rug's size on the product page and we cut the pad to fit, free — large pads ship as one piece, not seamed sections.
Common questions
My rug is bigger than 12 x 16. Can you still make the pad?
Yes — pads are custom cut up to 12 feet wide and 65 feet long, in one piece. Enter your rug's exact width and length on any pad's page and you'll see the price for your size. If your rug is wider than 12 feet, it needs to run the other direction: the 12-foot side is the width limit.
Does a rug this big really need a pad? It barely moves.
The middle stays put by weight, but the edges and corners still curl and shift, and a large rug's backing rubbing on hardwood is a lot of wear across a lot of floor. The pad is the floor's protection — and the cushion is what makes a big room feel finished.
Which pad should I get for hardwood floors?
Any pad on this page is safe for hardwood. Go Felt and Rubber if you want grip and cushion together, or Choice Felt if all you want is cushion.
Can I put a pad under a rug that's on carpet?
Yes — use the Carpet Grip pad. It goes in felt side down into the carpet pile, rubber side up against the rug, and stops the bunching and creeping that rugs do on carpet.
Does custom cutting cost extra?
No. Cutting is included with every pad, and shipping is free anywhere in the continental US.
Large rug questions from real homes
Our great room is two stories and footsteps carry everywhere.
Choice Felt 1/2". At large-rug scale, thick felt is real sound treatment: it absorbs footsteps on the rug and takes the hard edge off a big room's echo.
The furniture is heavy. What protects the floor?
Felt, and the thicker the better. It spreads the load under legs and feet so the pressure doesn't concentrate — the rug lasts longer and the floor under it stays unmarked.
