8 x 10 Rug Pad
The 8' x 10' is the rug size we sell most. It anchors a living room, fits under a dining table for six, and slides under a queen or king bed with room to spare. Every pad below comes in this size and we cut each one to fit your rug free, trimmed about an inch in from every edge so it never shows. What is an 8 x 10 rug pad?
It's the layer that goes between your rug and the floor. We cut it about an inch smaller than the rug on every side, so it stays completely hidden — and it does three jobs: it holds the rug in place, it protects the floor underneath, and it makes the rug feel better underfoot.
Where an 8 x 10 rug works best
The 8' x 10' is the rug size we sell most, because it anchors a room without covering the whole floor. It usually ends up in one of four places:
- Living rooms — the front legs of the sofa and chairs on the rug, the back legs off.
- Dining rooms — under a table for four to six, with room for chairs to slide out and stay on the rug.
- Bedrooms — under a queen or king bed, with rug to spare on both sides.
- Home offices and dens — under a desk and chair, or setting off a seating area.
Why bother with a pad at all?
1. The rug stops moving
Even a big rug creeps. Corners curl, edges wrinkle, and the whole thing slowly migrates across the room — especially where people walk. The right pad holds it flat.
2. Your floor is protected
A rug's backing is rougher than it looks. Left sitting on hardwood, laminate or tile for a few years, it can wear the finish down. A pad puts something soft in between.
3. It feels better
A thin rug straight on a hard floor feels like a sheet. Put a felt pad under it and it feels like a rug.
4. The rug lasts longer
Every step grinds a rug against the floor. A pad takes that wear instead, so the fibers hold up longer.
5. The room gets quieter
Felt soaks up footstep noise — worth having upstairs, or in an apartment.
How to choose the right pad
Hardwood, laminate, tile and vinyl floors
If the rug slides, start with grip:
- Felt and Rubber 1/4" and Felt and Rubber 5/16" — felt on top for cushion, natural rubber underneath to hold the rug still.
- Extra Grip — thin and low-profile, made for grip first.
- Comfort & Grip — also low-profile, with a layer of cushion added.
On top of carpet
For an area rug over wall-to-wall carpet, use the Felt and Rubber pads. They're made to work on carpet as well as hard floors, and they keep the rug from bunching up.
Radiant heated floors
Pick a breathable felt pad — the Choice Felt pads let the heat pass through instead of trapping it under the rug.
If furniture is holding the rug down
Under a bed or a heavy sofa, an 8' x 10' usually isn't going anywhere, so shop for cushion instead of grip. The Choice Felt pads come in three thicknesses:
- Choice Felt 1/4" — a little extra comfort, stays low.
- Choice Felt 3/8" — more cushion and more sound dampening.
- Choice Felt 1/2" — the thickest, softest felt we make.
Picking a thickness
Thinner pads sit lower, which matters at doorways and under chairs that slide in and out. Thicker pads feel softer and quiet the room more. If a door has to swing over the rug, go thinner.
Sizing tip: the pad should be smaller than the rug
About an inch smaller on every side — that's what lets the rug's edges lie flat and keeps the pad out of sight. For a true 8' x 10' rug, the pad comes out at roughly 7' 10" x 9' 10".
You don't need to measure twice or trim anything yourself. Enter your rug's size on the product page and we cut the pad to fit, free.

Common questions
What size pad do I need for an 8 x 10 rug?
About an inch smaller than the rug on every side — roughly 7' 10" x 9' 10". Order the 8' x 10' and we cut it down to that for you. Or enter your rug's exact measurements, and we'll cut to those instead.
My rug isn't exactly 8' x 10'. Now what?
Most aren't — they're often an inch or two off. Measure yours, type the exact width and length into any pad's page, and you'll see the price for your size.
Do I need a non-slip pad if furniture is holding the rug down?
Usually not. If the furniture keeps the rug in place, a felt pad for cushion is plenty. If it still creeps, switch to felt and rubber.
Which pad should I get for hardwood floors?
Any pad on this page is safe for hardwood. Go Felt and Rubber if you want grip and cushion together, Extra Grip or Comfort & Grip for a thin non-slip layer, or Choice Felt if all you want is cushion.
Can I put a pad under a rug that's on carpet?
Yes — the Felt and Rubber pads are made for it. They keep the rug from shifting and wrinkling on top of the carpet.
Does custom cutting cost extra?
No. Cutting is included with every pad, and shipping is free anywhere in the continental US.
8 x 10 questions from real homes
My dining room rug is jute, and the floor is hardwood. What keeps it from scratching — and from sliding when chairs move?
Jute is rough on the bottom, and it will scuff hardwood over time. Chairs dragging in and out make it worse. A Felt and Rubber pad solves both problems: the felt side cushions the jute and protects the floor, and the natural rubber underside keeps the rug still while the chairs slide.
Our bedroom rug is thick wool. How thick should the pad under it be?
The rug brings its own softness, so you don't need much. A Choice Felt 3/8" adds body and keeps the rug lying flat without feeling wobbly underfoot. Only go up to 1/2" if you want it noticeably plush — and check the door still clears it.
My rug already has a rubber backing. Is a pad a waste of money?
Not usually. A backed rug can still creep, and the backing itself can wear into a floor's finish over the years. A plain felt pad underneath adds a soft, breathable layer and stops the slow sliding. You just don't need a second grip layer.
The rug in my kid's room won't stay in place. What fixes it?
That's a grip problem, not a cushion problem. Extra Grip is the thin, grip-first pad; Comfort & Grip adds a bit of cushion on top. Either one holds an 8' x 10' flat in a busy room, and both sit low enough that the door still swings over them.
What about vinyl plank floors?
Use felt, or felt with natural rubber. Both are safe on vinyl plank, and both breathe — so heat and moisture don't get trapped under the rug — and neither one reacts with the finish. We wrote a whole guide on rug pads on vinyl plank floors if you want the details.
