What is a 10 x 14 rug pad?

It's the layer that goes between your rug and the floor. We cut it about an inch smaller than the rug on every side, so it stays completely hidden — and it does three jobs: it holds the rug in place, it protects the floor underneath, and it makes the rug feel better underfoot.

Where a 10 x 14 rug works best

Ten by fourteen covers the rooms that feel empty without it:

  • Great rooms — one rug for the whole living area.
  • Primary suites — bed, sitting area and then some.
  • Dining rooms — a table for ten or more.
  • Lofts — warmth and quiet on a big hard floor.

Why bother with a pad at all?

1. The rug stops moving

Even a big rug creeps. Corners curl, edges wrinkle, and the whole thing slowly migrates across the room — especially where people walk. The right pad holds it flat.

2. Your floor is protected

A rug's backing is rougher than it looks. Left sitting on hardwood, laminate or tile for a few years, it can wear the finish down. A pad puts something soft in between.

3. It feels better

A thin rug straight on a hard floor feels like a sheet. Put a felt pad under it and it feels like a rug.

4. The rug lasts longer

Every step grinds a rug against the floor. A pad takes that wear instead, so the fibers hold up longer.

5. The room gets quieter

Felt soaks up footstep noise — worth having upstairs, or in an apartment.

How to choose the right pad

Hardwood, laminate, tile and vinyl floors

If the rug slides, start with grip:

On top of carpet

For an area rug over wall-to-wall carpet, use the Felt and Rubber pads. They're made to work on carpet as well as hard floors, and they keep the rug from bunching up.

Radiant heated floors

Pick a breathable felt pad — the Choice Felt pads let the heat pass through instead of trapping it under the rug.

If furniture is holding the rug down

Under a bed or a heavy sofa, a 10' x 14' rug usually isn't going anywhere, so shop for cushion instead of grip. The Choice Felt pads come in three thicknesses:

Picking a thickness

Thinner pads sit lower, which matters at doorways and under chairs that slide in and out. Thicker pads feel softer and quiet the room more. If a door has to swing over the rug, go thinner.

Sizing tip: the pad should be smaller than the rug

About an inch smaller on every side — that's what lets the rug's edges lie flat and keeps the pad out of sight. For a true 10' x 14' rug, the pad comes out at roughly 9' 10" x 13' 10".

You don't need to measure twice or trim anything yourself. Enter your rug's size on the product page and we cut the pad to fit, free.

Common questions

What size pad do I need for a 10 x 14 rug?

About an inch smaller than the rug on every side — roughly 9' 10" x 13' 10". Order the 10' x 14' and we cut it down to that for you. Or enter your rug's exact measurements, and we'll cut to those instead.

My rug isn't exactly 10' x 14'. Now what?

Most aren't — they're often an inch or two off. Measure yours, type the exact width and length into any pad's page, and you'll see the price for your size.

Do I need a non-slip pad if furniture is holding the rug down?

Usually not. If the furniture keeps the rug in place, a felt pad for cushion is plenty. If it still creeps, switch to felt and rubber.

Which pad should I get for hardwood floors?

Any pad on this page is safe for hardwood. Go Felt and Rubber if you want grip and cushion together, a grip pad for a thin non-slip layer, or Choice Felt if all you want is cushion.

Can I put a pad under a rug that's on carpet?

Yes — the Felt and Rubber pads are made for it. They keep the rug from shifting and wrinkling on top of the carpet.

Does custom cutting cost extra?

No. Cutting is included with every pad, and shipping is free anywhere in the continental US.

10 x 14 questions from real homes

Will a pad stop furniture dents in the rug?

It helps. A felt pad spreads the pressure under heavy legs instead of letting it concentrate in one spot, so both the rug and the floor underneath take less of a beating.

One rug, two seating areas — what keeps the walkways between them flat?

Felt and Rubber. The walked-on paths are where a big rug wrinkles first; the rubber underside holds those lanes flat while the felt cushions the rest.

We have radiant heat under a big room. Safe?

Yes, with felt. The Choice Felt pads breathe and let the heat rise through the rug instead of trapping it underneath.
