What is a 12 x 12 rug pad?
It's the layer that goes between your rug and the floor. We cut it about an inch smaller than the rug on every side, so it stays completely hidden — and it does three jobs: it holds the rug in place, it protects the floor underneath, and it makes the rug feel better underfoot. At 144 square feet, it's also a serious amount of floor protection.
Where a 12 x 12 rug works best
Twelve by twelve is a room-defining rug — square, and big enough to hold a whole furniture layout:
- Great rooms — the full seating group on one rug, every leg on.
- Square living rooms — a rug that matches the room's shape instead of fighting it.
- Primary suites — under a king bed with rug to spare on three sides.
- Open-plan spaces — one big square anchoring the living zone.
Why bother with a pad at all?
1. The rug stops moving
Even a big rug creeps. Corners curl, edges wrinkle, and the whole thing slowly migrates across the room — especially where people walk. The right pad holds it flat.
2. Your floor is protected
A rug's backing is rougher than it looks. Left sitting on hardwood, laminate or tile for a few years, it can wear the finish down. A pad puts something soft in between.
3. It feels better
A thin rug straight on a hard floor feels like a sheet. Put a felt pad under it and it feels like a rug.
4. The rug lasts longer
Every step grinds a rug against the floor. A pad takes that wear instead, so the fibers hold up longer.
5. The room gets quieter
Felt soaks up footstep noise — worth having upstairs, or in an apartment.
How to choose the right pad
Hardwood, laminate, tile and vinyl floors
At this size the choice is felt for cushion, or felt and rubber when you want grip as well. Our thin grip pads don't run this large — and a rug this heavy mostly stays put on its own. If the edges still shift, Felt and Rubber is the non-slip pick:
- Felt and Rubber 1/4" — felt on top for cushion, natural rubber underneath for grip.
- Felt and Rubber 5/16" — the same idea, with more cushion.
On top of carpet
For an area rug over wall-to-wall carpet, use the Carpet Grip pad — it goes in felt side down, rubber side up, and keeps the rug from bunching and creeping on the carpet.
Radiant heated floors
Pick a breathable felt pad — the Choice Felt pads let the heat pass through instead of trapping it under the rug.
If furniture is holding the rug down
Under a bed, a dining table or a heavy sofa, a 12' x 12' rug usually isn't going anywhere, so shop for cushion instead of grip. The Choice Felt pads come in three thicknesses:
- Choice Felt 1/4" — a little extra comfort, stays low.
- Choice Felt 3/8" — more cushion and more sound dampening.
- Choice Felt 1/2" — the thickest, softest felt we make.
Picking a thickness
Thinner pads sit lower, which matters at doorways and under chairs that slide in and out. Thicker pads feel softer and quiet the room more. If a door has to swing over the rug, go thinner.
Sizing tip: the pad should be smaller than the rug
About an inch smaller on every side — that's what lets the rug's edges lie flat and keeps the pad out of sight. For a true 12' x 12' rug, the pad comes out at roughly 11' 10" x 11' 10".
You don't need to measure twice or trim anything yourself. Enter your rug's size on the product page and we cut the pad to fit, free — a 12' x 12' ships as one piece, not seamed sections.

Common questions
What size pad do I need for a 12 x 12 rug?
About an inch smaller than the rug on every side. Order the 12' x 12' and we cut it down to that for you. Or enter your rug's exact measurements, and we'll cut to those instead.
My rug isn't exactly 12' x 12'. Now what?
Most aren't — they're often an inch or two off. Measure yours, type the exact width and length into any pad's page, and you'll see the price for your size.
Do I need a non-slip pad if furniture is holding the rug down?
Usually not. If the furniture keeps the rug in place, a felt pad for cushion is plenty. If it still creeps, switch to felt and rubber.
Which pad should I get for hardwood floors?
Any pad on this page is safe for hardwood. Go Felt and Rubber if you want grip and cushion together, or Choice Felt if all you want is cushion.
Can I put a pad under a rug that's on carpet?
Yes — use the Carpet Grip pad. It goes in felt side down into the carpet pile, rubber side up against the rug, and stops the bunching and creeping that rugs do on carpet.
Does custom cutting cost extra?
No. Cutting is included with every pad, and shipping is free anywhere in the continental US.
12 x 12 questions from real homes
A rug this big barely moves. Does it really need a pad?
The middle stays put by weight, but the edges and corners still curl and shift, and 144 square feet of rug backing rubbing on hardwood is a lot of wear. The pad is the floor's protection — and the cushion is what makes a room that size feel finished.
Is a pad this size one piece?
Yes. We cut 12' x 12' pads in a single piece — our pads run up to 12 feet wide — so there are no seams or joins under the rug.
The great room echoes.
Choice Felt 1/2". At this scale, thick felt is real sound treatment — it absorbs footsteps on the rug and takes the hard edge off a big room.
