Runner Rug Pad

A runner is the hardest-working rug in the house — hallway, kitchen, entryway, feet on it all day, and it shows: runners creep, bunch and slide more than any other rug. The pads below are cut for runners in standard lengths (2' x 6', 2' x 8', 2' x 10') and to any custom length you type in, free. Every pad is trimmed about an inch in from every edge so it never shows. Start with what your floor needs: grip, cushion, or a little of both.

What is a runner rug pad?

It's the layer that goes between your runner and the floor. We cut it about an inch smaller than the rug on every side, so it stays completely hidden — and it does three jobs: it holds the runner in place, it protects the floor underneath, and it makes the runner feel better underfoot. No rug in the house works harder than a runner, so no rug benefits more.

Where a runner rug pad works best

  • Hallways — the main event. A long rug on a hard floor in the path of every trip through the house.
  • Kitchens — the run in front of the sink and stove, where you stand and shift your weight for hours.
  • Entryways and mudrooms — the runner that takes the weather, the boots and the dog.
  • Upstairs halls — where a padded runner also quiets footsteps over the rooms below.
  • Laundry rooms and long bathrooms — narrow rugs on smooth, sometimes damp floors.

One exception: a runner on the stairs takes a different pad — see the stair question below.

Why bother with a pad at all?

1. The rug stops moving

A runner gets walked along its whole length, so it creeps toward one end and bunches in the middle. The right pad holds it flat.

2. Your floor is protected

A rug's backing is rougher than it looks. Left sitting on hardwood, laminate or tile for a few years, it can wear the finish down. A pad puts something soft in between.

3. It feels better

A thin runner straight on a hard floor feels like a sheet. Put a cushioned pad under it and it feels like a rug.

4. The rug lasts longer

Every step grinds a rug against the floor — and a hallway rug takes more steps than any other. A pad takes that wear instead, so the fibers hold up longer.

5. The hallway gets quieter

The felt top on the Felt and Rubber pads soaks up footstep noise — hallways carry sound through the whole house, so a padded runner makes a real difference, especially upstairs.

How to choose the right pad

Hardwood, laminate, tile and vinyl floors

On a hard floor a runner wants to travel. Start with grip:

On top of carpet

A runner on wall-to-wall carpet bunches and ripples worst of all. The Felt and Rubber pads are made to work on carpet as well as hard floors — their felt face settles into the carpet pile and gives the runner a firm base, so it stops creeping and wrinkling.

Want cushion with your grip?

Go Felt and Rubber 5/16". It's the same grip underneath with a thicker felt top — the most cushion of any runner pad we sell, and the felt absorbs hallway noise as well.

Door clearance

Runners live in doorways. If a door has to swing over the rug, go thin — Extra Grip, Comfort & Grip, or the Felt and Rubber 1/4". Save the 5/16" for open hallway runs where nothing swings over it.

Sizing tip: the pad should be smaller than the rug

About an inch smaller on every side — that's what lets the runner's edges lie flat and keeps the pad out of sight. For a true 2' x 8' runner, the pad comes out at roughly 1' 10" x 7' 10".

You don't need to trim anything yourself. Enter your runner's size on the product page and we cut the pad to fit, free — any width up to 12 feet, any length up to 65 feet, in one piece.

Runner rug pad prices

Prices below are for the most common runner size, 2' x 8'. Other lengths price the same way on each product page — a 2' x 6' starts at $49.46 and a 2' x 12' tops out at $122.95 before the code — and every pad is cut to fit your runner free. Here's what each one costs in 2' x 8', with and without the PAD20 code.

Common questions

What size pad do I need for a runner?

About an inch smaller than the runner on every side — a 2' x 8' runner takes a pad of roughly 1' 10" x 7' 10". Order your runner's size and we cut it down to that for you. Or enter your runner's exact measurements, and we'll cut to those instead.

My runner is 2.5 feet wide, or an odd length. Now what?

Most runners are a standard 2', 2.5' or 3' wide and anywhere from 6 to 14 feet long. Measure yours, type the exact width and length into any pad's page, and you'll see the price for your size — cutting to it is free.

Do hallway runners really need a non-slip pad?

On hard floors, yes. A runner gets walked along its length all day, so it creeps forward and bunches at the ends. A grip pad — Extra Grip, Comfort & Grip, or Felt and Rubber — holds it where you put it.

Can you cut a really long runner pad — 12, 14, even 20 feet?

Yes. We cut runner pads in one piece up to 65 feet long. Type the length into the product page and the price adjusts to the next size up.

What about a runner on the stairs?

That's a different pad. On stairs, the runner is held by carpet nails and tack strips, and the pad's job is cushion under each step — those are our carpet stair tread pads, cut for treads, not a hallway runner pad.

Does custom cutting cost extra?

No. Cutting is included with every pad, and shipping is free anywhere in the continental US.

Runner questions from real homes

My kitchen runner slides every time I stand at the sink.

Extra Grip. It's the thinnest, grippiest pad we make, it sits low enough for the kitchen's door swings, and it holds a runner still on tile, vinyl or hardwood.

The hallway runner keeps bunching up on the carpet underneath.

Use a Felt and Rubber pad. Its felt face settles down into the carpet pile and gives the runner a firm, flat base to sit on, so it stops rippling and creeping.

Our upstairs hallway echoes every footstep.

Felt and Rubber 5/16". A hallway is a sound tunnel, and the thick felt top absorbs footfalls before they carry. Just check door clearance first — if a door swings over the runner, use the 1/4" instead.
