2 x 4 Oval Rug Pad
A 2' x 4' oval rug works the spots rectangles can't — inside the door, under a small oval table, in front of the vanity. Every pad below comes in this size, cut as a true oval that follows your rug's curve — not a rectangle with the corners trimmed — and finished about an inch in from the edge all the way around, so it never shows. Start with what your floor needs: grip, cushion, or a little of both.

What is a 2 x 4 oval rug pad?
It's the layer that goes between your oval rug and the floor — and it has to be cut as a true oval. A rectangle pad with the corners trimmed always shows at the ends and never sits right. Ours follow the rug's exact curve, finished about an inch in from the edge all the way around, so the pad stays completely hidden. It does three jobs: it holds the rug in place, it protects the floor underneath, and it makes the rug feel better underfoot. This page is for the OVAL 2 x 4 — if your rug is a rectangle, see the 2 x 4 rug pad page instead.
Where a 2 x 4 oval rug works best
Two by four oval is the narrow landing — longer than a mat, softer than a runner:
- Entryways — a soft landing inside the door that doesn't fight the swing.
- Under a small oval table — a café table or side table, with the rug following its shape.
- Bathrooms — a warm oval in front of the vanity or the tub.
- Reading nooks and nurseries — one chair, one lamp, one soft oval to land on.
Why bother with a pad at all?
1. The rug stops moving
Even a big rug creeps. Corners curl, edges wrinkle, and the whole thing slowly migrates across the room — especially where people walk. The right pad holds it flat.
2. Your floor is protected
A rug's backing is rougher than it looks. Left sitting on hardwood, laminate or tile for a few years, it can wear the finish down. A pad puts something soft in between.
3. It feels better
A thin rug straight on a hard floor feels like a sheet. Put a felt pad under it and it feels like a rug.
4. The rug lasts longer
Every step grinds a rug against the floor. A pad takes that wear instead, so the fibers hold up longer.
5. The room gets quieter
Felt soaks up footstep noise — worth having upstairs, or in an apartment.
How to choose the right pad
Hardwood, laminate, tile and vinyl floors
If the rug slides, start with grip:
- Felt and Rubber 1/4" and Felt and Rubber 5/16" — felt on top for cushion, natural rubber underneath to hold the rug still.
- Extra Grip — thin and low-profile, made for grip first.
- Comfort & Grip — also low-profile, with a layer of cushion added.
On top of carpet
For an area rug over wall-to-wall carpet, use the Carpet Grip pad — it goes in felt side down, rubber side up, and keeps the rug from bunching and creeping on the carpet.
Radiant heated floors
Pick a breathable felt pad — the Choice Felt pads let the heat pass through instead of trapping it under the rug.
If furniture is holding the rug down
Under a bed, a dining table or a heavy sofa, a 2' x 4' usually isn't going anywhere, so shop for cushion instead of grip. The Choice Felt pads come in three thicknesses:
- Choice Felt 1/4" — a little extra comfort, stays low.
- Choice Felt 3/8" — more cushion and more sound dampening.
- Choice Felt 1/2" — the thickest, softest felt we make.
Picking a thickness
Thinner pads sit lower, which matters at doorways and under chairs that slide in and out. Thicker pads feel softer and quiet the room more. If a door has to swing over the rug, go thinner.
Sizing tip: the pad should be smaller than the rug
About an inch smaller all the way around — that's what lets the rug's edge lie flat and keeps the pad out of sight. For a true 2' x 4' oval rug, the pad comes out at roughly 1' 10" x 3' 10".
You don't need to measure twice or trim anything yourself. Enter your rug's size on the product page, choose the Oval shape, and we cut the pad to fit, free.

Common questions
What size pad do I need for a 2 x 4 oval rug?
About an inch smaller than the rug all the way around — roughly 1' 10" x 3' 10". Order the 2' x 4' oval and we cut it down to that for you. Or enter your rug's exact measurements, and we'll cut to those instead.
My rug isn't exactly 2' x 4'. Now what?
Most aren't — they're often an inch or two off. Measure yours at its longest point (that's the length) and its widest point (the width), type the exact numbers into any pad's page, and you'll see the price for your size.
Do I need a non-slip pad if furniture is holding the rug down?
Usually not. If the furniture keeps the rug in place, a felt pad for cushion is plenty. If it still creeps, switch to felt and rubber.
Which pad should I get for hardwood floors?
Any pad on this page is safe for hardwood. Go Felt and Rubber if you want grip and cushion together, Extra Grip for grip alone, or Choice Felt if all you want is cushion.
Can I put a pad under a rug that's on carpet?
Yes — use the Carpet Grip pad. It goes in felt side down into the carpet pile, rubber side up against the rug, and stops the bunching and creeping that rugs do on carpet.
Does custom cutting cost extra?
No. Cutting is included with every pad, and shipping is free anywhere in the continental US.
2 x 4 oval questions from real homes
I tried a rectangle pad under my oval rug and the corners stuck out at the ends.
That's the classic oval problem — a trimmed rectangle is the wrong shape in both directions: too much pad at the ends, not enough at the middle of the sides. Ours are cut as true ovals, following the rug's curve, finished an inch inside the edge so nothing shows.
My little oval rug slides and slowly turns by the door.
Small rugs have no weight holding them down, and an oval has no corners to square it against. Extra Grip is the thin, strong-hold pick — it stops the sliding and the slow rotation without adding height the door can catch.
Is a pad overkill for a rug this small?
Small rugs move the most — there's nothing holding them down. The pad is what keeps it where you put it, and it keeps the backing from scuffing the floor every time it shifts.
