What Size Rug Pad Do You Need? The 2-Inch Rule, Explained
Share
Order a rug pad the exact same size as your rug and you will see it peeking out at the edges within a week. Order it too small and the rug's edges curl up and turn into a trip hazard. There is a simple standard that avoids both problems, and it is the one professional installers use: the 2-inch rule.
The rule: 2 inches smaller, in both dimensions
Your pad should measure 2 inches less than your rug in width and 2 inches less in length. That leaves a 1-inch border of rug extending past the pad on every side. So an 8x10 rug takes a pad of 7'10" x 9'10", and a 5x8 takes 4'10" x 7'10".
Why 1 inch per side? Three reasons. First, the pad stays completely hidden — no edge creeps out as the rug shifts slightly in daily use. Second, the outer inch of the rug settles down toward the floor, so the edge tapers instead of sitting up on a raised shelf with a visible ridge. That taper is what lets the edge lie flat instead of curling. Third, a pad that pokes out from under a rug collects dirt, looks sloppy, and creates a trip edge of its own.
Rug size to pad size chart
| Rug size | Order this pad size |
|---|---|
| 2 x 3 ft | 1'10" x 2'10" |
| 3 x 5 ft | 2'10" x 4'10" |
| 5 x 8 ft | 4'10" x 7'10" |
| 6 x 9 ft | 5'10" x 8'10" |
| 8 x 10 ft | 7'10" x 9'10" |
| 9 x 12 ft | 8'10" x 11'10" |
| 10 x 14 ft | 9'10" x 13'10" |
| Runner, 2.5 x 8 ft | 2'4" x 7'10" |
| Runner, 2.5 x 10 ft | 2'4" x 9'10" |
The pattern never changes: subtract 2 inches from each measurement. If your rug's true size is not on the chart — and it often is not — the same subtraction still works. That is the whole rule.
Measure the rug, not the label
Rug sizes are nominal. A rug sold as an 8x10 might actually measure 7'9" x 10'1", and hand-knotted rugs vary even more. So measure your rug in inches, in both directions — width can differ slightly from one end to the other, so use the smaller measurement — and do not count the fringe. Then subtract 2 inches from each number.
If you order from us, you do not even have to do the subtraction: tell us the rug size and we apply the rule when we cut. Every pad on our custom-cut rug pad page is made to order this way, cut 2 inches smaller than the rug unless you tell us otherwise.
Round, oval, and other shapes
The rule works for shapes too — the pad simply follows the rug's shape with the same 1-inch inset all the way around. For a round rug, subtract 2 inches from the diameter: a 6-foot round rug takes a 5'10" round pad. Ovals follow both axes: subtract 2 inches from the length and 2 from the width. For an octagon or any unusual outline, the principle is identical — the pad follows the outline, 1 inch inside it everywhere. This is where stock pads give up entirely, because nobody stocks a 7'4" oval.

When custom cutting beats trimming a stock pad
The traditional workaround is buying an oversized stock pad and cutting it down with scissors or a utility knife. It works, after a fashion — but dense felt and felt + rubber are genuinely hard to cut cleanly at home. Edges come out wavy, corners wander, and a wavy pad edge under a rug edge is a curl waiting to happen. Trimming also means stock sizes dictate your inset: a 6x9 stock pad under a rug that actually measures 6'2" x 9'1" leaves some sides short and others flush.
Custom cutting makes sense whenever your rug is a non-standard size, a shape other than a rectangle, or a pad too thick to cut well by hand. It is also simply the default with us, because cutting is free: a pad like our Eco Felt 1/4 inch pad arrives at exactly 7'10" x 9'10" for your 8x10 rug — no knife work, no measuring twice, no guessing.
Frequently asked questions
Should a rug pad be exactly the same size as the rug?
No. A same-size pad will eventually show at the edges as the rug shifts, and it holds the rug's edge up on a ridge so the edge curls instead of lying flat. Two inches smaller — 1 inch per side — is the standard for a reason.
What if my rug measures between standard sizes?
That is normal, and it is the best argument for custom cutting. Measure the actual rug in inches, subtract 2 inches from each dimension, and order that exact size instead of rounding to the nearest stock pad.
Does the 2-inch rule apply to runners too?
Yes — subtract 2 inches from the runner's length and 2 inches from its width. The long edges are where a runner pad shows first, so the inset matters most on exactly those sides.
