Square rug under a dining table with a felt rug pad underneath

Square Rug Pad

Most rug pads come in rectangles and leave you trimming a corner yourself. Ours are cut to your rug's exact shape and size — square pads to the inch — so the pad sits about an inch inside the rug edge all the way around, which is what keeps it invisible and stops curling.

Square rugs sit in entryways, under square dining tables and in reading corners — and they creep and curl like any rug on a hard floor. These pads are custom-cut to your rug's exact square size, in felt for cushion, or a cushioned grip pad when you also need hold. Every order ships free in 1–2 business days and is backed by a 10-year warranty.

A simple shape that still misbehaves

Square rugs feel like the easy case — one measurement, four equal sides. On a hard floor they still creep toward the nearest wall, rotate a few degrees out of true, and curl at the corners like any other rug. They also live in demanding spots: entryways, under square dining tables where chairs slide in four directions, and reading corners where a chair's feet work the same patch all day. The pad's job is to match the shape exactly and then handle whichever of those problems your room actually has.

Measure once — then check it twice

Measure one side of the rug, edge to edge — then measure the adjoining side too. Plenty of “square” rugs are off by an inch or two in one direction, especially hand-made ones, and a pad cut to the honest dimensions fits better than a perfect square that doesn't match the rug. Order the rug's size and we finish the pad about an inch smaller on every side, so it stays hidden and the edges lie flat. A square has one more trick: rug and pad can be rotated a quarter turn together every few months to even out wear and fading.

Felt, grip, or cushioned grip?

The five pads here cover the range. Eco Felt 1/4 inch, Felt 3/8 inch and Choice Felt 1/2 inch give cushion and floor protection at three depths — right when a table or furniture anchors the rug. Extra Grip is a thin polymer-coated polyester mesh for squares that only need holding, like an entryway. Comfort Grip adds a cushioned layer to the grip, a good middle choice under a dining table where chairs are always moving. The custom-cut rug pad page walks through how sizing and cutting work.

Squares in bedrooms and offices

Two more places squares earn their keep: beside a bed, where the first steps of the day land, and under a desk, where a chair's casters work a small area relentlessly. For the bedside, felt is the natural pick — soft, quiet, and held in place by the bed itself. Under a desk chair, choose grip: casters push a rug in small increments all day, and a square on Comfort Grip stays where it was put while still cushioning the floor against the chair's weight.

Square Rug Pad FAQs

How do I measure a square rug for a pad?

Measure one side edge to edge — then measure the next side too, because many “square” rugs are slightly rectangular in reality. Order with the true dimensions and we cut the pad about an inch smaller on every side so it never shows. An honest measurement beats an assumed one; a pad that's a perfect square under a slightly-off rug will peek on one side.

Which pad is best under a square dining table?

The table anchors the rug, so felt is usually the right call — 3/8 inch for everyday dining, 1/2 inch if you want the room softer and quieter. Chairs sliding in and out are the one force working against you; if the rug visibly walks despite the table, switch to Comfort Grip, which adds hold to the cushion. Either way the pad spreads chair-leg pressure and protects the floor finish.

My square rug keeps rotating out of alignment. What fixes it?

Grip. Small rotations come from everyday traffic nudging the rug a fraction at a time, and felt's gentle friction won't stop it. Extra Grip holds a square rug at the thinnest profile; Comfort Grip does the same with cushion added. Once it's held, rotating the rug a quarter turn now and then is a feature, not a problem — it evens out wear.

Will the pad show at the edges of my square rug?

No — that's the point of the custom cut. The finished pad is about an inch smaller than the rug on every side, so it stops short of the edge all the way around and the rug's own border settles onto the floor. A stock pad, by contrast, only “almost” fits, which is exactly when an edge creeps out and shows.

What pad works for a square rug in an entryway?

Entryways mean grit, wet shoes and a door that swings close over the rug, so thin usually wins: Eco Felt at 1/4 inch for protection with minimal height, or Extra Grip if the rug won't stay put. Both are custom-cut to your rug's dimensions. If the entry rug is a heavy one that never moves, any of the felts will serve — pick by how much cushion you want.
