Thick felt rug pad under a bedroom rug

Rug Pad for Under a Bed

A rug pad for under a bed is felt where it counts: cushion for your first steps in the morning, a quieter room underfoot, and a dense layer between your floor and the bed frame's legs. Choose pure felt when softness is the whole job, or felt and rubber if the rug's edges keep creeping out of line. Every pad is cut to your rug's exact size free, ships free within 1–2 business days, and carries a 10-year warranty.

Most of a bed rug hides under the frame — the pad's job shows at the edges: cushion for your first steps, quiet underfoot, and protection where the frame meets the floor. Here's how it breaks down:

Why a Pad Under a Bed Rug Earns Its Keep

Most of a bed rug hides under the frame — the pad's job shows at the edges: cushion for your first steps, quiet underfoot, and protection where the frame meets the floor. Here's how it breaks down:

The Step-Out Strip

The part of a bedroom rug you actually feel is the strip beside the bed, every morning and every night. That's where pad thickness turns a thin rug into something soft underfoot — the Felt 3/8" is the sweet spot for most bedrooms, and the 1/2" is the softest we make.

A Quieter Room

Felt absorbs sound. A felt pad under a bed rug takes the edge off footsteps, dropped phones, and a frame shifting in the night — worth the most in a bedroom above another room, or in an apartment where the neighbors are below you.

Under the Frame Itself

A bed concentrates a lot of weight on four small legs or casters, and that pressure goes straight through a rug into the floor. A dense felt pad spreads the load and keeps the legs from denting or scratching the surface underneath. The Choice Felt 1/2" is the densest cushion we sell for exactly this spot.

Keeping the Rug Aligned

Beds shift a little every time you sit on the edge, and an unpadded rug creeps with it — one side slowly sticks out further than the other. A felt and rubber pad, rubber side down on a hard floor, holds the rug registered under the bed so the border stays even on all sides.

Under-Bed Rug Pad FAQs

Why put a rug pad under a rug that's under a bed?

Three reasons: cushion where you step out of bed, protection for the floor under the frame's legs and casters, and a quieter room — felt absorbs the sound a bare rug lets through. The part of the rug under the bed may be out of sight, but the pad under it is still working.

How thick should a rug pad under a bed be?

1/4" if you want a low profile and door clearance, 3/8" for the balance most bedrooms want, and 1/2" for maximum cushion at the bedside. The pad is cut 2" smaller than the rug — 1" in from each edge — so it never peeks out, and custom cutting is always free.

Should the pad be the size of the rug or the size of the bed?

The rug. Order the pad for the rug it sits under, not the bed and not the room — it will be cut 2" smaller than the rug in both directions. A bedroom rug usually extends past both sides and the foot of the bed, and the pad should run under all of it, including the part hidden by the frame.

My bedroom has wall-to-wall carpet. Do I need a pad under the bed rug?

If the rug creeps or bunches on the carpet, yes — but not a felt pad. Use Carpet Grip, which goes in felt side down into the carpet pile with the rubber side up against the rug, and stops the creeping. On carpet, a plain felt pad adds cushion but won't stop the rug from wandering.
