Carpet stair tread pads fitted on wooden steps - cushion and wear protection under a stair runner

Do I Need a Pad Under My Stair Runner?

Short answer: yes - and on stairs it matters more than anywhere else in the house. Here's why, and what to actually buy.

What a pad does on stairs

Every step lands the same way, in the same spot, with your full weight on the nosing - the front edge of each tread. Without a pad, that repeated impact crushes the runner's fibers and backing at exactly the spot that gets stepped on thousands of times, and the runner wears thin at the edge first.

A pad under a stair runner: (1) cushions every step, so the runner isn't getting crushed between your foot and the tread, (2) absorbs impact at the nosing where runners wear out first - which is what makes the runner last years longer, (3) quiets the stairs - a dense pad takes the hollow thud out of every step.

How the runner actually stays put

The pad is not what holds your runner in place, and it isn't a grip layer. A stair runner is installed the way carpet is installed - secured with carpet nails and tack strips. The pad sits under the runner purely for cushion and protection, so the runner takes the wear instead of your stairs - and lasts far longer doing it.

Why regular rug pads don't work here

Full-size rug pads - felt and rubber included - are the wrong tool for stairs. They are too thick and spongy for treads and create a soft, uneven step edge. Stair pads are made for the job: cut to tread size, thinner, denser, and shaped to protect the nosing where the wear happens.

What to buy

Both of our carpet stair tread pads are made to go under a stair runner:

Carpet Stair Pad (Bullnose) - wraps the front edge of the tread where all the wear lands, for full-step protection including the nosing.
Flat Step Stair Tread Pad - covers the flat tread for cushion and wear protection without wrapping the edge.

Safety note

Stairs are the one place where "good enough" padding is a real hazard. Use pads made for treads, keep them fully under the runner with no overhang, and make sure the runner itself is properly installed with nails and tack strips.
