Custom-Cut Rug Pads vs. Stock Sizes: Why the Fit Matters

Most rug pads are sold in a handful of stock sizes — 5x8, 8x10, 9x12 — on the assumption that your rug is exactly one of those sizes. Most rugs are not. A rug sold as an 8x10 is often 7'9" x 9'10", 8'2" x 10'1", or something in between, and handmade rugs are rarely perfectly rectangular at all. Put a stock pad under a rug like that and you get one of two problems: a pad that peeks out at the edges, or a pad that stops short and leaves the rug's edges unsupported. A custom-cut pad is cut to your rug's actual measurements, and that difference is the whole point of the pad.

What goes wrong with a stock size

Gaps where the rug needs support most

Rug edges take the hardest wear. They get stepped on, caught by vacuum cleaners, and curled by foot traffic turning into a room. When a stock pad stops 4 or 6 inches short on one side — common when the rug is a few inches over the stock size — that edge has no cushion and no grip underneath it. It curls, it folds, and it wears thin years before the center of the rug does.

A pad that shows

The opposite mismatch is just as common. If your rug is slightly under the stock size, the pad sticks out beyond it. A visible pad edge looks sloppy, collects dust along the line where it meets the floor, and creates a small lip that feet and chair legs catch on. Trimming a stock pad down yourself is an option, but dense felt does not cut cleanly with household scissors, and a crooked home trim usually looks worse than the overhang did.

Uneven grip and bunching

A pad holds a rug flat by covering nearly all of its underside. Leave a wide border unsupported and the rug can shift and bunch over the pad's edge, especially in hallways and dining rooms where chairs slide in and out. Full, even coverage is what keeps the rug lying flat — and coverage is exactly what stock sizes compromise.

How custom cutting works

You measure your rug — length and width, in a couple of places if it is handmade — and the pad is cut to those measurements, minus 2 inches in each dimension. That 2-inch rule (1 inch per side) keeps the pad completely hidden while supporting the rug almost to its edges. We explain the reasoning in detail in our 2-inch rule sizing guide.

Custom cutting also handles the shapes stock pads ignore: round rugs, oval rugs, runners in non-standard lengths, and rugs cut to fit around a fireplace hearth or a bay window. If you can measure it, it can be cut. Our custom-cut rug pad page walks through how to measure, including what to do when opposite sides of a handmade rug differ by an inch or two — in that case, cut to the smaller measurement so the pad never shows.

When a stock size is honestly fine

Custom cutting is not always necessary. If your rug measures within about an inch of a standard size, a stock pad in that size will sit hidden and do its job. Small rugs and mats that get moved and shaken out often — a 2x3 by a sink, for example — do not benefit much from a precision fit either. And if you are putting an inexpensive pad under an inexpensive rug for a short-term setup, stock is a reasonable economy.

Where custom cutting earns its cost is everywhere else: a good rug you expect to keep for years, an odd or in-between size, a runner, a round rug, or any rug whose edges are already starting to curl. In those cases the pad is protecting a much larger investment, and a poor fit undermines the protection you bought it for.

Which pad to have cut

The most versatile choice for hard floors is felt with a rubber backing: felt for cushion and floor protection, rubber for grip. Our Felt and Rubber Rug Pad 1/4 inch is hardwood- and vinyl-safe — the felt contains no PVC or adhesive that can mark a finish — and every one is cut to the size you enter, not pulled from a stock shelf. For large rugs anchored by furniture where grip matters less, a pure felt pad cut the same way gives you the cushion and protection at a lower price.

One practical tip before you order: measure the rug itself, not the listing. Rugs are sold by nominal size and almost always measure a little differently in person. Thirty seconds with a tape measure is the difference between a pad that fits and another stock-size compromise.

Frequently asked questions

How much smaller than my rug should a custom-cut pad be?

Two inches smaller in each dimension — 1 inch per side. That keeps the pad hidden under the rug while supporting it almost to the edges, so the edges lie flat instead of curling.

Can a custom-cut pad be made for a round or odd-shaped rug?

Yes. Round, oval, runner, and other non-standard shapes can all be cut to your measurements. Measure the widest and longest points, and for handmade rugs that are not perfectly even, give the smaller measurement so the pad stays hidden.

Is custom cutting worth it for an 8x10 rug?

Usually, yes — because most rugs sold as 8x10 do not measure exactly 8x10. If yours measures within about an inch of a stock size, stock is fine. If it is off by more than that, a custom cut prevents the gaps and overhang that cause curling edges and visible pad lines.
